This day Alexander went to pay a visit to Diogenes.
Diogenes: It was morning, just time of dusk: I heard voices and marching horses, I came out of my (pithos = large tub) tub and saw Alexander and his horsemen. I lay down in front of my tub, feeling the warm sun.
Alexander and the horsemen stopped, and he came to me. He greeted me and I did the same, then he stared at me for a long time without saying anything. I looked at him as well, he was young, very young, almost a child.
Then Alexander asked:
Alexander The Great: It is true that you live in that tub? or it is just one of those pranks philosophers do in order for the people to talk and admire them?

I will answer with a question, Alexander! Is it true you want to conquer Persia, and so unit all Greeks under your leadership? or do you do all this just for the sake of getting the admiration of the people? |
Alexander liked my answer! He smiled, touched my tub and said:

I liked his words and I felt flattered, but quickly replied:
I prefer one drop of luck, than a tub full of wisdom, great King!
Sometimes wisdom drives you to a bitter taste of vanity, and all your works will stop in death! and one drop of luck can open streets you never could imagine and give you happiness you never knew!
Alexander understood every word and knew the meaning of luck in life better than anyone; then he came closer to Diogenes and said:
I would like to do something very important for you, Diogenes.
I know you chose this kind solitaire life, but I think that sometimes in your life you want something better. Ask me, what you want and it will be a pleasure for me to give it to you.

But, the American Heart Association threatened to sue me, and one of the two manufacturers of MSM threatened to sue me -- and a few others!
This issue of The Wednesday Letter brings you a few of the exposes I've written about -- some previously published, some not.

I have long-followed the theory that people often swallow lies, thinking them to be true, and that thereafter they cannot accept the truth on that subject unless the lies are exposed as lies. Thus, in my writing I work hard to find the dishonesty -- to let you know where it is. I hope, then, that you will see that you have swallowed lies, and can now accept the truth.
For instance, heart disease is NOT caused by high cholesterol. It is a lie for people to claim that this is true. I have a 400 page book in print, converted to more than 2,000 pages on the web, with what should be convincing evidence about the fraud in cholesterol research that led to the false findings that cholesterol in your food, such as eggs, causes cholesterol in your blood and that the high cholesterol causes death from heart disease. The final end of this string of lies, of course, is that you need some cholesterol lowering drug to save your life. What a string of lies! Finally I wrote the ultimate expose of the myth about cholesterol. It is HERE.
Not all the lies are told by drug companies!
One of my constant sources of pain is the practice of some vitamin companies to deliberately promote false data -- very aggressively. Here is an example of this.
You may have wondered what a capsule filling machine looks like? Here is one! This machine can fill about 29,000 capsules per hour. The ingredients, in powdered form, are poured into one of the bins, capsules into others; the whole process is very automated. If this machine gets clogged for 30 minutes, that would be 15,000 capsules that were NOT made -- expensive for this machine to ever get clogged!
How do you prevent this machine from getting clogged?
By adding "flowing agents" to make the powdered material flow easily through the various tubes!
When various ingredients are combined into a formula, and then put into capsules for the final packaging, it is often true that the ingredients may not flow through the capsule-filling machine easily. One or more of the ingredients may absorb moisture and then stick to other particles in the mix of ingredients. You then get "clumps" of material that clog up the capsule filling machine.
So, various vitamin companies looked around for something they could add to the powdered ingredients that would prevent the clumping -- make flowing easier. They found several materials that are completely safe, inert, cheap and virtually every vitamin company uses one of these common flowing agents.
I, Karl Loren, have investigated these additives and do NOT feel that those I have investigated are a harmful addition to the products being made.
There was one company, however, that decided they were willing to put out false information about a common flowing agent -- they had a formula where they found a different way to make it -- without these flowing agents. They deliberately set out to claim that all their competitors were using this very dangerous, even deadly, "additive." It is "dicalcium phosphate."
When I first heard this story I thought the claim of danger was false, but I wasn't enough of a biochemist to expose their lies.
I hired a very experienced biochemist to do an analysis for me -- I sent him the promotional material from this company. In due course he wrote a detailed report of how false these claims were. His report included his name, of course, but also his educational credits and his credentials to write authoritatively about this matter.
I published that report on my web site -- named the company and very openly criticized it for putting out false and misleading information -- for the purpose of harming their competitors.
They soon contacted me and threatened to sue me if I did not remove the derogatory material about their false claims. I, of course, refused. I am certainly not afraid of lawsuits.
But, they then contacted this expert -- this biochemist -- and threatened to sue HIM. There was no question that the basis for such a lawsuit was ridiculous, but even so the lawsuit would have to be defended by the expert. He would have to hire a lawyer. It could easily cost him $10,000 or more. I have defended myself in court, many times, and am quite good at that.
This Company was more than willing to spend $10,000 for ITS lawyers, to protect its public image and to prevent people from learning the truth about their false claims. But, the biochemist had no such interest in paying out money to get a victory in court -- a victory that would do him no good at all!

Very unfortunately I have felt that I had to delete the name of the company that used this extortion to force my biochemist to ask me, actually beg me, to take the material off my web site. I've done that not to protect myself, but to protect the biochemist who wrote the report.
It is now back on the web, but out of deference to the biochemist I have agreed to delete his name and the name of that fraudulent company. If you write me, personally, I'll be glad to tell you who they are. They are one of the large, well-known vitamin companies on the internet.
This may seem a small thing, but, like Diogenes, I have traveled up and down the web, looking for an honest vitamin company. They are hard to find.
Here is another set of frauds!
You know that I sell Methyl Sulfonyl Methane -- MSM!
If you have done a bit of reading on the web, you'll find
that certain other companies claim that they are the ONLY sources of legal
MSM -- that if you buy from anywhere else (like Vibrant Life) you are buying
illegal and inferior MSM.
I even got a letter from one of those companies threatening to sue me just for selling MSM without paying them a royalty because, they claimed, they had an exclusive legal right to sell MSM -- that I did not have that right. Click here to see the legal threat from the Carolwood MSM company.
They, of course, have backed off completely now that I have fought back, but I did more than just disagree with their silly lawsuit. I investigated them! When you are the good guy, and someone attacks you, the only proper action is to investigate -- you will find them with dirty hands!
Here is what I found.
MSM stands for Methyl Sulfonyl Methane.
It is manufactured from the waste products of the paper industry. Click Here if you would like a detailed explanation of the manufacturing process. The waste product has the chemical name: DMSO.

is a waste product of the paper-making industry. Paper is made by
pouring sulfuric acid on wood chips made from trees.

Despite what anyone may tell you, all MSM is manufactured in the same way. You take DMSO and boil it. As it heats up the DMSO absorbs extra oxygen from the air and each molecule of DMSO gets one extra atom of oxygen -- it can then be called DMSO2, or, same thing, MSM.
There are many different types of patents in existence. The most valuable patent is called a "process patent."
A "process patent" means that the US Patent Office gives you the exclusive rights to use some particular process. There is no patent issued for the process of making MSM. It is too late. MSM was being made by several companies before any patent was issued, so no one can now claim to have "invented" it.
There is another type of patent -- referred to as a "Use Patent." This type of patent has practically no technical value.
In the field of MSM there is one person who has obtained many "use patents."
ALL THE PATENTS issued, of any type, for MSM, have been located on my web site for more than two years.

To my knowledge no other web site in the world provides actual copies of all these patents.

Patent Office, where you can also view that actual patent. Thus, anyone can check MY web site, and from there go to the U. S. Patent Office to verify that what I have stated on my page is the truth about these patents.
As you look over these patents, you'll find one, for instance, relates to the use of MSM to stop someone from snoring!

The actual summary language of that patent is as shown below:
A method of pharmaceutically managing snoring is provided by the instillation intranasally of a solution containing 1-20% methylsulfonylmethane by weight dissolved in water so as to saturate the nasal mucous membranes. Preferably, the solution has between 10%-16% by weight methysulfonylmethane. The solution may be buffered, and/or a mild analgesic may be included. The method prefers that instillation occur as close to the sleep event as possible, and it should be at least within one hour before a person retires for sleep. The solution may be introduced by spray or drop-wise, and a product packaging the solution in a suitable container is described.
What a "USE PATENT" allows the inventor is to be the ONLY person who can claim that the product has this use.
Of the 16 patents granted to MSM, one is for relief from snoring. Research at Oregon Health Sciences University on 35 subjects suffering from chronic snoring has shown that MSM, as a 16 percent water solution administered to each nostril 15 minutes before sleep, provided significant reduction in 80 percent of the subjects after one to four days of use. The USE PATENT does not give the patent-holder any exclusive rights to manufacture or sell MSM, but this one gives him the exclusive right to make a public claim, such as, "My MSM can help you stop snoring!" You may have seen TV ads on "Stop Snoring!"
Now that a "use patent" is issued, the company can claim that "their MSM" is "patented." This is true, but omits the significant data that it is patented ONLY for the claim on stopping snoring. Yet the company (Cardinal) which originally had the patent license was busy suing any company selling ANY MSM, and even any company BUYING MSM from some other source -- saying these these people were violating the law. They spent lots of money on law suits and prevented many companies (that didn't want to pay for defending their legal rights) from buying MSM. I, personally, had a prospect who buys more than five TONS of MSM per month become very interested in MY MSM. They asked about my view of the "patent claims." I explained the "use patent." They knew about that, but they also knew that the "other" company would sue them if they bought from me.
Now that it has become known that MSM can stop snoring, then OTHER companies realized that they could take advantage of this truth, make a product with NO MSM in it, but claim that their product would "work." You have no idea of the number of fraudulent products being sold that just don't do what is claimed. Of course it is illegal, and of course they would pay you a refund if you cared enough to complain about your $20 purchase. But, they rake in lots of money, waiting until their fraud is exposed and then just silently creep away.
Vibrant Life cannot legally claim that ITS MSM will stop snoring -- but when you realize that ALL MSM is virtually the same, what value does this patent have?
Well, one way to get around this problem for the patent-holder would be to claim that his MSM was different from anyone else's MSM. This is not true, of course, but it can be claimed to be true.

On that web site there is a link to "where does MSM come from." This data is terribly misleading. I quote it exactly below:
The cycle of MSM begins in the ocean where microscopic plants called plankton release sulfur compounds. These salts are transformed in the ocean water into the very volatile compound dimethyl sulfide (DMS) which escapes from the ocean as a gas. DMS rises into the upper atmosphere, and in the presence of ozone and high-energy ultraviolet light, is converted into its cousins, dimethyl sulfide (DMSO) and MSM.
Unlike the DMS, both DMSO and MSM are very soluble in water, and they return to earth in the form of rain. On earth, plants take MSM into their root systems and concentrate it. MSM and the sulfur it contains is incorporated into the plants' structure. Through the plants' metabolism, MSM, along with other sulfur compounds it has spawned, is ultimately mineralized and transported back to the sea.
The idea that MSM is manufactured from the waste product of the paper industry seems like a bad image, so Carolwood claims, as you can read above, that MSM and DSMO are somehow found naturally in plants. While that is true, there is no possible way to extract the MSM or DMSO from plants, other than the simple process of producing paper by pouring sulfuric acid on chips of wood.
So, we see that Carolwood is attempting to deceive the public by implying that their MSM is "natural." This is the same company that threatened to sue me!
Remember that all MSM is made in exactly the same way -- from DMSO -- the waste product of paper-making.
The two US manufacturers have attempted to mislead customers further by using special names for their MSM. Carolwood uses:
Carolwood calls their stuff Lignisul -- and simply adds an additive to pure MSM. The MSM sold by Vibrant Life has no additives. Because Carolwood adds things to its MSM, it can then justify calling their MSM by the name "Lignisul MSM." (I don't claim that their additive is harmful -- but it is an additive.)

They too add stuff to their MSM, so they can imply that is somehow different from other MSM. They call their MSM by the name of:
"OptiMSM"
Cardinal, also, attempts to hide the paper-industry waste product nature of MSM, publishing this for the origin of MSM:
Where Does MSM Come From?You see that this is not an outright lie, but it certainly does HIDE the true origin of MSM.
MSM originates in the oceans where microscopic plankton release sulfur compounds into seawater, which is quickly converted to DMS, a volatile sulfur compound that escapes into the atmosphere. In this suspended, gaseous state, the DMS reacts with ozone and ultraviolet sunlight to create DMSO and DMSO2, known as MSM. MSM then falls to the earth with the rain, where it is collected and concentrated in plants. Although MSM is abundant in nature, even the richest natural sources only provide MSM in the level of several parts per million. Commercial "harvesting" of MSM is not possible. MSM is produced by oxidizing DMSO. This process replicates the exact natural compound.
Cardinal does NOT show the patents for MSM on its web site (neither does Carolwood), but indicates that it has the patent rights for MSM:
Cardinal Nutrition, the sole
maker of
OptiMSM, is the original United States producer licensed under the R. J.
Herschler domestic and foreign patents.
The truth is that the patents relating to MSM are useless for preventing anyone from making and selling MSM.
Why would the two main competitors suddenly BOTH get rights to the patents? My opinion on this is:
The guy that got these worthless patents couldn't begin to get any money from anyone who was making MSM, or who wanted to make MSM. So, he went into a collusive agreement to restrict competition. Cardinal agreed to pay a fee to the patent holder so that they could say that they were the ONLY company that had "the patents for MSM."
For many years they claimed that they were the ONLY company allowed to sell the "patented" MSM. This was very misleading, but many people feared lawsuits if they bought MSM from anyone else. Understand that the patents had nothing to do with making or selling MSM -- but things like stopping snoring.
Cardinal wanted to prevent anyone else from entering the MSM market because they wanted a monopoly, so they could raise the price.
However, Carolwood was making MSM and therefore Cardinal sued Carolwood. That lawsuit went on for many years. I talked to several executives of Carolwood, including the son-in-law of the President. I learned that Carolwood considered the patents worthless, but that they had spent (they claimed) millions of dollars to defend their right to sell MSM.
That lawsuit was settled, I believe, by an illegal conspiracy to restrain trade in MSM -- Cardinal allowed the patent holder to license Carolwood, in addition to Cardinal, so that the two of them could get into a price-fixing agreement, and so that they could fight the growing presence of Vibrant Life's MSM in the US. This lawsuit was NOT settled until after Vibrant Life MSM became the lowest priced MSM on the web.
Yes, indeed, the MSM sold by Vibrant Life is manufactured in India, and the largest independent testing lab in the world, SGS, tests our MSM. The other two companies claim that their MSM is tested in independent labs, but they never give the names of those labs, or a copy of the certificate of purity on their web sites.

There is much more I could tell you, but the basic truth here is that Cardinal and Carolwood are frightened to death that Vibrant Life will take away the entire market for MSM.
They both use lawyers like guerillas making false claims about their "patents" and their purity.
Cardinal, for instance, claims that their MSM is 99.9% pure. What they don't tell you is that the 0.1% "impurity" is only moisture. The same is true for Vibrant Life MSM. We have a purity of 99.5% with 0.5% moisture. I don't think this tiny difference in the amount of moisture should ethically be used to claim that their stuff is superior.
It is not!
If you receive any claims from someone that "their" MSM is the only "legal" MSM in the US, you can send them this article and let them know that Karl Loren calls them liars!
My Own Area Of Expertise
After all these years researching and writing about
"oral chelation" I think I can claim the title of the world's most
knowledgeable man on this subject.
There is no question that Vibrant Life has more web pages relating to oral chelation than all other web sites in the world, combined. That alone doesn't make me most knowledgeable, but it is a step in that direction. It is really a qualitative decisions -- yours to make. I suggest that if you are interested in oral chelation I am the guy to ask and to trust.
So, when I announce that some number of "other" oral chelation formulas are worthless, or frauds, I guess my opinion on this should carry some weight.
I use very simple criteria. An oral "chelation"
material should contain some "chelating substances." The chelating
substances that are very effective are well known -- they are not
mysteries. The amino acids Cysteine and N Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) as
well as the artificial amino acid, EDTA, are well known chelating
substances. There are others, generally not as well known, or not as
effective. If someone claims to sell a "chelation" formula with zero
or very little of these chelating substances, I call that a fraud.

The above three evidences of dishonesty in the vitamin world are, of course, tiny by comparison to the lies told by the drug companies.
I wrote an entire Book on the lies told about cholesterol. There are now many billions of dollars spent every year on fake medicine -- cholesterol lowering drugs that may lower your cholesterol levels, but do NOT reduce your risk of death from heart disease.
I state this, very briefly, and simply, here, but there is a massive trillion dollar fraud involving millions of people who depend on this fraud for their weekly pay! Lipitor would be one of the worst of these! I wrote another report on the fraud of Lipitor HERE.
How can they sleep at night.
As I cast the light of my lantern around, looking for an honest vitamin company, or an honest doctor, or an honest drug company, it is clear that I will run out of fuel for my lantern long before I ever find another honest company than my own.
How Can You Learn All This Stuff?

I suggest that it is very hard for you to learn all this. I spend virtually full time researching the frauds in my industry -- the health industry -- and I know that I catch only a tiny part of them all! You probably can't possibly afford to spend the amount of time I do. So, what can YOU do? All I can suggest, in great sympathy for your situation, is that you go with your heart, and logic, and find some one person you trust and whose data you can accept. Last Month I Turned 70!
I celebrated by going white water rafting on the Kern River.
I had a ball! That is me in the front right of the picture. Jean Ross, my wife, is in a different raft. I have become even more of a professional photograhper and have just published the official Karl Loren Photo Gallery.
That is my daughter Maia in the left front of the raft and various other family behind us.

May 21, 1931, I was born in Cleveland, Ohio.
May 19 and 20, 2001, I spent some hours rafting on the Kern River and then on a Wave Runner on Lake Elanore near Kernville, California! Monday, the actual day of my birthday, was a relaxed ride back home ending with a fine raw meat banquet (the rest of the family still eats cooked).
