Oral Chelation And Prostate "Cancer" (?)

    Dear Karl,

    Thank you, and Maia, for the book on cancer and oral chelation. It inspired me to

suggest that I could donate my body to Vibrant Life, in a manner of speaking. You see,

for the last 9 or 10 years I have been making choices about my prostate cancer that are

at odds with the practitioner's preference. I figure they can do anything they wish with

their prostates, just don't mess with mine in potentially damaging ways. Here's the story:

About 12 years ago, the doctor who did my annual physical exam told me that my prostate

seemed to be enlarging and that I should have it checked by a urologist. He had told me

that the previous year and I did nothing because I had no symptoms. He told me the same

thing the following year and since I still had done nothing he called a specialist and made

an appointment for me. My doctor was a good friend and I was willing.

The urologist examined me and agreed that it was getting large. He thought he felt some

bumps and suggested a biopsy.  Half of the 7 or 8 specimens were malignant. He suggested

external radiation (I think he owned an interest in the lab that did those) and I told him I

wanted to check other options.

Well, the other options were: remove the gland with a knife; or implant radioactive seeds

into it.  I chose the brachytherapy, I think they call it.  One night in the hospital in San

Antonio and so non-invasive that I was able to drive part of the 225 miles home the next

morning.

My PSA at that point was 8.  The prostate was almost twice the normal size. Still no

symptoms.  Six months after the procedure the PSA had dropped to 4 and the gland was

smaller.  Another six months and it was down to 2 and still shrinking. After a year the PSA

was below 1 and the prostate was down to a normal size.

Five years went by and at that annual check-up the PSA was almost 2. Six months later it

was 4.  It slowly started rising --- up to 10 and then last August it was at 12.  Still no symptoms

and the gland size was still normal.

What to do?  The urologist I'd been seeing all those years said it was time to castrate me. My

choices were: 1) chemically; or 2) surgically.  I'm not ready for either.  I got other opinions and

the only one that appealed to me was to have a procedure to determine where the cancer cells

were in my body.  Then what?  So I didn't do that but went to the top, Johns Hopkins, with all

my records. I was told that my health was good, my attitude was good, and that until there was

some indication, some symptoms, there was really nothing to do.  That was 3 months ago.

If the climbing PSA count indicates that there are prostate cancer cells in my bloodstream that

have not organized into a tumor attached to some part of my system why not start oral chelation?

And if I do, what kind of measurable base can we establish to find out what effect the treatment

is having.  That's the kind of test I'd like to submit to.  What do you say?

Yours is a great and detailed story.

I don't have a quick and detailed answer for you.

First it is clear to me that oral chelation will prevent cancer.

But, it is not clear, yet, how well oral chelation will do during the various stages of cancer.

1. Normal cells live a normal life and multiply in their own normal way.  A  good reference to normal cells is How Cells In The Body Reproduce.  The image below is the most common form of cell reproduction, called "mitosis."

   

2. Normal cells also have a normal life span.  Here is a good reference to that:  How Long Do Cells Live?  What Is An Immortal Cell?  Most cells have a specific number of times they can reproduce. See the link for that data.  Since this is true if one cell becomes cancerous, it may well not be able to reproduce into many more cancerous cells beyond its natural limit.

3. Some cells never die.  Some die in a short time.  Some "cells" like "red blood cells" are not "alive" and do not reproduce or "die" but "wear out."  Click Here for more information on cell reproduction, including cancer cell reproduction.

4. The organs, and the body, generally do not grow larger after the age of maturity, so continued cell growth normally does not mean that the body grows bigger.  However, parts of the body, for instance the prostate, can start growing in size, because of a cancer or tumor -- and then the organ could become larger than original. 

5. The fact that some organ is larger than it should normally be is a "sign" or a "marker" that there may be cancer or a tumor.  An enlarged organ would be an obvious and visible sign that something is wrong.

6. There are many "signs" or "markers" that tell you that there is something wrong earlier (and later) than when an organ gets larger than it should be.

7. The PSA reading is such a marker.  The PSA reading measures something called the Prostate Specific Antigen.  Click here for more data about that "marker."  You could get a sample of fresh blood and let a lab look for the PSA.  (Keep in mind that these diagnostic labs are often unreliable.)

8. Cancers go through various "stages" from some sort of start to some final category.  Click here for the stages normally used for prostate cancer.  The link here is a traditional and technical view of the stages of prostate cancer.

9. Read Studies Commenting on the Link Between Free Radicals And Cancer.  This link shows studies that provide the link between free radical damage to a cell and cancer caused by that cell then reproducing improperly.  It might reproduce more rapidly than normal, or it might "ignore" a chemical signal to die.

10. Cancer starts, probably, with one cell that multiplies wrongly.  One "wrongness" is "too fast."  How fast does this "wrong copy" of the old cell wait before it reproduces again?  That varies depending on the type of cell.  Lets say that some cell normally reproduces ever 20 days, and that when the DNA in that cell has been damaged by free radicals, the cell then starts to multiply every 5 days, instead of every 20.  Even at the new rate of five days between multiplications, it will take some time for that mass to move from a stage that could be called "initiation" to the next stage.  The average "cancer" in a breast has been "growing" for 10 years before it can be seen or felt.
