Critical Remarks About DMG

There have been a number of false claims about the biological activity of pangamic acid, a
derivative of the amino acid glycine (pangamic acid is dimethyl glycine). This substance
has been reported to be an oxygenator of body tissues, and also as an excellent scavanger
of free radicals. Unfortunately, none of these claims has held up under scientific
scrutiny. Therefore, we suggest that visitors avoid using this chemical as a vitamin
suppliment until further work has been conducted on the biological properties.
Certain vitamins and nutrients have been found to be helpful in autistic children. DMG or dimethyl glycine has been helpful in many children. DMG is sold as a food supplement. Other nutrients that have proved useful are high doses of vitamin B6 and magnesium. These protocols can be found at the Autism Research Institute. Recently we have been using several nutritional products designed to improve cognitive function with success in some patients.

Multiple factors contribute to this syndrome, and different horses are sensitive to different conditions. Regular exercise, daily turn out, a consistent low-carbohydrate/high-fat diet, and a stress-free environment may decrease the incidence and severity of tying-up. Feeding the horse balanced electrolytes, vitamins, and minerals--especially vitamin E, selenium, and calcium--is believed to be effective. Preventive measures that reduce stress, reduce potassium depletion, and improve energy metabolism have been used with varying degrees of success. Chromium seems to decrease the effects of stress in nervous horses. Dimethyl glycine (DMG) increases the efficiency of energy metabolism. Sodium bicarbonate added to the diet as a buffer is helpful in cases of potassium depletion. Dantrolene and phenytoin are compounds used in the prevention of tying-up, but these are not allowed in horses on the race track.

We all hope that the average trainer today believes in the concept that his/her horses should compete on the basis of their own natural talent, without any stimulation from illegal substances. This is a wise point of view for several reasons, not the least of which is that most illegal substances do not actually improve the horse's performance, when the horse is in top condition.

So the use of various ergogenic substances continues among trainers without proof of efficacy from research. Take for example the use of dimethyl glycine (DMG). This substance is one of the many products which is used in energy metabolism within the cells. It is reported by some to delay muscle fatigue. It seems to counteract the effects of lactic acid in the muscles, reducing the muscle pain which results from intense exercise.
