Food generally comes in three classes: Protein, Carbohydrates and Fats.
Sometimes "fiber" is added as a fourth food group.
Each of these types (but not fiber, of course) of food is digested in the stomach -- converted into more simple forms of the food.
Carbohydrates, for instance, are converted into some form of sugar.
Fats are converted into fatty acids.
Proteins are converted, in the stomach, into something called Amino Acids.
These amino acids are often called the building blocks of the body since ALL the structure of the body is manufactured by the body, using various amino acids as the building blocks.
Your skin, your heart, your liver, your toe nails, your hair, your lungs, all the structure of your body is created by the body using different amino acids as the basic components.
There are many different amino acids.
There is one single page where you can find links to many other pages on which information about amino acids can be found. Click here to go to that summary and linking page.
Any protein type of food you can name can be analyzed as to which particular amino acids are contained within it.
Cysteine, for instance, is one of these amino acids, and it is commonly found in the yolk of an egg. In fact, each yolk of an egg contains about 250 milligrams of the amino acid -- Cysteine.
You can learn more about cysteine by going to a summary page, linking to more than 200 additional pages about cysteine.
When you eat an egg you get not only the cysteine in that yolk, but several other amino acids -- all in exactly the right balance to be used by the body as building blocks for structure.
So, if you eat an egg, you DO get cysteine into your body, but all of that cysteine, being in combination with other amino acids, is used up for building purposes.
There is another form of amino acids -- free form amino acids. Without getting technical here, if you tood JUST the cysteine into your body, not all the other amino acids which are in that egg yolk, just cysteine, you get a different effect inside the body.
The body receives this cysteine but CAN'T use it for a building block because the building process requies a balanced set of amino acids.
When you take a free form amino acid, such as cysteine alone, or cysteine with other separate amino acids in such a combination that they are not "balanced" for building purposes, you start getting very interesting different effects inside the body.
There is an amino acid, Arginine, for instance, that you find in turkey meat. When you eat turkey, however, you are getting lots of other amino acids besides arginine.
Arginine in turkey is fine as food, but when you take arginine as a separate (free form) amino acid, it does wonderous other things.
Arginine, as a separate free form amino acid helps the body build immune system cells. Ornithine is another free form amino acid which helps the body build up the immune system.
Both arginine and ornithine have the additional ability, when taken as free form amino acids, to help the body build muscles. Many body builders, for instance, will take large quantities of these two amino acids, in powder or capsule form, so that it is easier for them to build up their muscles.
Arginine, as an ingredient in turkey, doesn't do this! It won't help your immune system and it won't build muscles.
So, when you take an amino acid as a separate substance (free form) or when you take an amino acid in a deliberately "unbalanced" combination, then the various amino acids do various OTHER things inside the body -- other than being used to build muscle, bone and tissue.
Most vitamin formulas which include amino acids use the free form variety because otherwise you are paying a lot of money for a small amount of turkey.
