Dr. Gary Bassett - Comment On AHA Situation

Perhaps the American Heart Association is staffed and supported by people who find the strongest rationale (in their own minds) for the position they support. Usually, if one starts out to prove something they have come to believe, it is not so difficult to find evidence for that "religious" state of mind. It doesn't have to be true, just offer an emotional position that can be used to rally those of like "insanity" who want there to be an answer from "on high.."

From that lofty perch of "righteousness," it is a simple matter to look down upon those who do not hold the same beliefs and attack them with ridicule, berating them for challenging the logic of the "faith."

Huge organizations like the AHA tend to take the position that they are "righteous" in large part simply because so many "wise" individuals hold their beliefs and proudly stand behind their "proof" in the statistics. I am reminded of Galileo, who was persecuted because his "ridiculous" perceptions of the construction of the heavens was counter to the views of authoritarian religious leaders.

Through personal and professional experience, I have come to observe that much of the belief system of the AHA leads to incomplete understanding of the nature of heart disease and often unsuccessful methods for its prevention. If that were not so, how could heart disease remain the #1 killer in our society.

I have also been astounded by the "crusade" to suppress alternate views that could provide hope for those thousands who have little of it from the AHA.

Karl, I am both sad and glad that you find yourself at the center of this maelstrom. Though you are a small army against a much greater one, I believe you have an advantage in the truth. It does not mean you will emerge victorious; most of us have outgrown the fantasy that right always wins. It does mean that more lives will be saved as others see the blindness of the masses as a result of your battles. May the wind be at your back, my friend!

Someone once said "a man is known by his enemies," and I would prefer to have big ones!

Their letter suggests that I have ten days to answer. My first plan is to take longer than the ten days. That will test their intentions. I will, nonetheless, publish my reply on the web, as well as this letter about my intentions in this regard.

If they see my published letter, and react to it, so much the better since I will have controlled the playing field to that degree.

If they sue, and ask for an injunction, I'll shift into "trademark law research" mood and represent myself in Federal Court.

It is a battle which everyone needs to find, sometime in his own life, when he is ready to stand for the truth despite the forces of ignorance and evil opposing.
