Why Is The Tobacco Tax Immoral?
How Do Our Children Learn Morality?

Tobacco
The Current Assault On Public Morality!

by Karl Loren
Consider the following. Let me get this straight.
We have farmers in Virginia growing a toxic weed -- for generations, and we have the government paying them a bounty for continuing to produce tons of this noxious weed.
![]() |
These farmers could grow apples, or potatoes, but they prefer to grow something involved with a government hand-out. Since they are paid by the government they come to believe that growing toxic weeds must be "morally right." They certainly think that it would be "wrong" to take away their government subsidy. |
And thus is the morality of this group corrupted.
They think wrong is right!
![]() |
If you are the child of a tobacco grower, what is YOUR view of the morality of growing the leaf? Then, we have tobacco companies which "cure" this weed by adding smoke and chemicals -- then complicate it further with deliberately addictive drug additives to the tobacco leaf. |
They, of course, think this is "right." Man seldom does things he regards as "wrong." Most every criminal in prison thinks that his victim "deserved it!"
They think wrong is right!
If you are the child of a tobacco company executive, what is YOUR view of the morality of producing cigarettes?
Then we have the international community which engages in large-scale export and import of cigarettes, to countries where our Government has established trade deals so that foreign children can get hooked and die.
What if your father is an international trader, helping to smooth the flow of products from one country to another -- without any concern, of course, for the harmful nature of the products moving so nicely.
After all, if it is "legal" it must be "right."
![]() |
They think wrong is right! Then, we have those tobacco companies, and their advertising agencies, designing very clever promotions which target kids, particularly to get them addicted at an early age. They think this is right, do they not? |
They think wrong is right!
If you are the child of an advertising agency executive who earns a million dollars per year designing ads to trick and addict children, you probably think your dad is a good guy.
What is your view of the morality of this? Somewhere in here we have the ultimate victim. This is the guy who smokes and who then gets sick and blames the tobacco company. He is "right" of course, because he believes that it is the responsibility of the tobacco company, not his own responsibility to avoid putting toxic substances into his body. After all, isn't the government, or the tobacco company, or SOMEONE else responsible for his condition? They think wrong is right! |
![]() |
What is the morality of this victim -- blaming others for his problems. It is, of course, not just the victim who blames others, it is all of society, now warped in its viewpoints of morality, that encourages the victim to blame others.
And, what if you are the child of a father who gets lung cancer. Do you agree with the moral viewpoint of your father -- that the lung cancer was caused by the tobacco company, and that your father is "right."
What is your view of the morality of all this?
They think wrong is right!
![]() |
Then, we have the trial lawyers making hundreds of millions of dollars, representing those who are victims of their own choices. What is the moral viewpoint of these lawyers. Are they not "doing good?" After all, they know that the victims are not responsible for their own lung cancer and they know that they, the lawyers, the champions of morality, are putting the blame where it belongs, on the guys with the deep pockets! You notice that the lawyers are not suing the farmers! |
They think wrong is right!
![]() |
If you are the child of a trial lawyer, living in the house on the hill, and enjoying the finer things, what is YOUR view of the morality of this? Your father must be right, and you inherit a moral philosophy that it is "right" for your father to make many millions of dollars suing tobacco companies on behalf of victims. |
These millions on lawsuits, of course, couldn't exist without the constitutional protection of the victim -- the constitutional right to sue for damages. When a government grants immunity to a criminal, allowing the criminal to continue to commit his crimes, what message on morality is given to the citizens?
They think wrong is right! Some of these lawyers stand to make as much as $5 billion every year for 25 years! There has never been such a staggering attack on public morality. You live next door to this guy and your child asks you: "Daddy, what does Mr. Jones do for a living?"
See the amazing facts in a Wall Street Journal editorial.
What if you are a clear and logical thinker, working in one of the universities. You see the evils of smoking; you see the victim-hood of the citizenry, and you obviously have a moral duty to intervene in all this -- to punish the bad guys and help the victims. You are an "elitist!" There is no higher calling. You are the person who is morally above the crowd, and who decides on what is "right" or "wrong" for society. You write books and appear on talk shows. You earn TV ratings with your opinions. |
![]() |
You fashion the ideas that drive the Congress, or perhaps you are a Congressman yourself.
You decide that "tobacco has to pay" and that in order to get them to pay it is OK to give them immunity from liability for the harm caused by their products. They will use the tax money to pay for health care for children and pregnant women. The ends justify the means. They think wrong is right! |
|
Is that the message: that some people are above the law -- and that Congress will pass laws giving exemptions from the law to certain people?
Remember this was the same band of lawmakers who voted to pay farmers a bounty to produce toxic weeds -- to pay them out of your tax money.
If you are the child of a congressman, what is your view of the morality of what your father has done?
They think wrong is right!
In this day and age I would assume that the morality of the bible takes a far fifth place to the morality of the marketplace.
Is that the moral message that money is senior to honesty? So, Congress passes a law giving the criminals immunity, and extorts many billions of dollars for that immunity for the tobacco companies. Now that the tobacco companies are immune from liability, and the Government is collecting billions of dollars in new tax revenues, do you honestly think that either the government or the tobacco companies want to see a reduction in smoking? |
|
They think wrong is right!
How many youngsters are learning their morality through this maze of activities -- involving, actually, millions of people whose view of morality is warped by the reality of the mighty tobacco dollar.
Now, it gets better. The government, deceitfully claiming to be the friend of the smoking victim, and the poor, takes some of your tax dollars and hires non-profit (and therefore "good") organizations to find new ways to educate other victims in society -- those poor pregnant women who can't afford to support a child, get pregnant, and then depend on tobacco tax money to pay for their medical care. These do-good agencies earn their moral values in society by helping victims apply for and receive government hand-outs for their victim-hood!
They think wrong is right!
Isn't it a "right" of the poor to get money from the rich? Isn't it "right" to help the victims learn how to get free money? If you are a child of a poor, pregnant woman, what is your view of the morality of your mother getting rewarded with free or subsidized medical care because she is poor, because she is a victim, because she is pregnant and can't afford the consequences of her own free will action? |
|
It gets even better. The money for this free so-called "medical care" goes to doctors who, among other things get paid to give cancer-causing drugs to these poor victims of unwanted pregnancy, paid for by sale of toxic weeds.
All this money, if you've been counting, comes from taxes paid by the few remaining among us who work honestly for a living. I wonder how much of our population is living by greed, dishonestly, by taking the fruit of that part of the population which produce honest products.
What is the morality of a doctor who takes government money, extorted from tobacco companies, to give free treatment to the victims of society.
If you are the child of a doctor, what is your view of the morality of your father's income?
They think wrong is right!
The doctors in all this are seldom allowed to make personal medical choices, but have to hew to an administrative and profit-driven management or insurance company.
So, is not the doctor blind to all the channels by which taxes of the few remaining among us who work honestly for a living come into his pocket.
They think wrong is right!
If you are the child of a doctor, what is your view of the morality of your father?
The money the doctors DO receive, they realize, is a reward for all the previous evils that have been government-sponsored and victim-chosen.
What a wonderful cycle of greed and corruption for ALL concerned. There is not one single good character in all of this.
Oh, how about the tax-payer supported non-profit organization which goes out looking for the pregnant victims in society -- to give them so-called health services which will cost the government about $3,000, but cost the victim only $600?
