Effective Jan. 2, 2002 Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) has been classified as a precursor substance by Oregon State House Bill 3661. Oregon law now prohibits the sale of more than 2 pounds of MSM (powder or capsules) to retail customers.
This same company makes deceptive claims that their MSM has valuable patents:
Robert Herschler began his study of MSM in 1955. His goal was to find commercial uses for this new chemical. Research costs limited his investigations to very select applications. Food use is the only significant market at this time. Mr. Herschler's investigations led to his securing a total of nine United States and several additional foreign patents governing the biological and cosmetic uses of MSM

None of these patents cover the "process" or "technology" by which MSM is manufactured. They cover what is usually called a "usage claim," such as the claim that MSM, when used in a certain way, reduces pain. In general it would be very hard for this patent holder to prevent anyone from voicing a similar claim, but the patent allows this inventor to not only make that claim but to put the word "patented" next to the products for which he makes that claim. Someone else could make a similar claim, but could not call his product "patented" without getting permission of the holder of the patent.
Early on the deceptive folks who obtained a license to "use" these patents claimed that they had the ONLY patented MSM and they also threatened other sellers of MSM of violating their patents. They threatened ME with lawsuit -- they have not followed up on the original threat.
At one time I was talking fairly often to a company called Carolwood, one of the two so-called US manufactures of MSM in the United States. I have exact notes of my conversations. Click here for that story.
At the time of THOSE notes Carolwood did not have the license to claim "patented MSM" and was being sued by Cardinal. I allege, and do not offer to prove, that Cardinal and Carolwood agreed to then share these patents, so that both of them could claim to sell "patented" MSM. I allege and do not attempt to prove that they then conspired to drive me out of business because my prices were too low. I allege, and do attempt to prove, that these two companies have divided up the MSM market between them, and use the "patented claim" to threaten possible buyers, particularly in foreign countries, with law suit if they buy from me.
The actual manufacturing process by which MSM is manufactured has been long-published by me, but not available anywhere else. THIS REPORT shows the nature of the other two companies in claiming that their MSM is made from "organic sources" or "trees," when, in fact, their MSM, like mine, is made from the waste product of the paper industry.

Unfortunately, some well known national brand companies have been selling highly diluted MSM to their customers. One brand contained less than 3% pure MSM, while stating on their label, "The pure MSM in this product is the highest quality available." Which was probably true but what the company failed to say was that in addition to the pure MSM, the capsules contained 97% fillers. If you have used MSM in the past without getting the health results you were hoping for, there's a good chance the product you tried was not full strength and pure. Please do not deny yourself the benefits of MSM without trying truly pure MSM. The following is the simple way you can test your MSM for purity: Empty the contents of one capsule or one half
teaspoon of MSM powder into a clear glass of water. The MSM will immediately
sink to the bottom, and dissolve within a few minutes. All the contents of
capsules or powder containing fillers will not sink to the bottom, and not
all of the material will dissolve. You can stir it or not stir it, either
way the results will be the same: the MSM will immediately sink to the

The Claim That Pure MSM Will Sink Is False!
Virtually all MSM is manufactured by the same process and has the same quality. I describe that manufacturing process here.
The manufacturing process is such that it is very difficult to make MSM with any impurities in it.
When MSM is made it leaves the "production container" as a solid crystalline material in "hunks" of MSM. These hunks must be ground so that they can then be put into bottles or capsules, etc.
One technique of grinding is called "irregular grind." This process grinds the MSM chunks into a crystalline powder of irregular size particles. Generally this is called the "large crystal" and the crystals are, in fact "rather large.
Another technique of grinding is to use the same type of grinder, but to pass the finished material through a "screen" so that only the particles that are smaller than the size of the holes in the screen can pass through. Differently sized particles of MSM can be thus made by using different type of "screen."
A screen which is "60 mesh" contains 60 holes per inch and thus passes only particles that will fit through that size hole. This is rather small in size of particle, and is often called "fine grind" or even "MSM snow."
The MSM is no different in chemical make-up whether it is fine grind or irregular grind.
However, if you put different sizes of particles of MSM into water, some particle sizes will float, while others will sink. Also MSM will dissolve, or not dissolve, depending on the temperature of the water. It does NOT dissolve well in cold water, but any MSM (small or large crystal) will dissolve in hot water. This amount of heating will not harm the MSM.
The entire lie by Blue Mountain is exposed by the simple explanation above.
Vibrant Life, in fact, has had both "irregular grind" and "fine grind" sized particles for sale -- we started with one size. Our customers said they preferred the different size. We changed, and found that many customers then said that they preferred the original size.
Vibrant Life MSM has no additives of any type. Blue Mountain admits that they have an additive in their MSM. I do not claim that the additive is harmful, but it certainly does NOT add to their purity.
Blue Mountain is also deceptive in that most "fillers" that could be added to MSM actually cost more to produce than the MSM itself. Thus, it is foolhardy to add some substance to make the MSM cost less.
The various percentages of purity? The truth of the matter is that when MSM is manufactured there will be moisture captured in the final product. The amount of moisture depends on the humidity of the atmosphere where the factory is located. Vibrant Life MSM has a purity of 99.5% pure, and 0.5% moisture.
Those who make their MSM in a dryer area get a finished product which has less moisture -- they then deceitfully claim that their purity -- 99.9% pure -- indicates a more pure product that Vibrant Life at 99.5%. The only difference is the amount of moisture in the product. This is a trivial difference.
No other source of MSM on the planet uses an independent testing lab to measure the purity -- Vibrant Life does.
Vibrant Life sells much of its MSM into non-US countries. Vibrant Life is the ONLY company that has an FDA Certificate endorsing its MSM. The other two US companies do NOT have FDA certificates.
Many other sources of MSM make the deceptive claim that their MSM comes from trees and plants:
MSM (methyl-sufonyl-methane), a stable metabolite of DMSO, is a special biological sulfur found in all plants, soils, fruits, vegetables, fish, poultry, eggs, meats and milk. It is organic sulfur, a naturally occurring compound in the human body. In the purified form that we sell, it is an odorless white crystal with a slightly bitter taste.
As mentioned above, MSM is made from DMSO which is a waste product of the process of manufacturing paper. Paper is generally made from trees. Thus in this roundabout way their claim is true -- but it deceptive. They just can't stand the truth of the use of a "waste product."

To the best of my knowledge no other web source for MSM has an INDEPENDENT laboratory certificate of analysis -- they all use "in house" labs to test their own stuff. I have posted our certificate of analysis on the web site.
The capsules are made in an factory approved by the FDA to manufacture pharmaceuticals -- as far as I know there are no other capsules being made under such strict requirements as ours -- this FDA certification gives you more assurance that you are getting what you pay for -- and nothing else by pure MSM.

I have used MSM, personally, for many years, as have many others I know. In some instances pain relief comes within minutes! If this hadn't happened with so many of my friends I could put it down to a fluke. But, MSM is no fluke!
From my own experience there is much more that MSM can do for you than is even written in this Book, but it appears to me that the authors are bending over backwards to avoid claims that are too dramatic.
As the authors point out, MSM is less toxic than water and, when you look for it, you'll find it is also far less expensive than many nutrients which do far less good.
The writing style is good, the data is expert and the subject is important.
I think of MSM as primarily a cleansing agent, but it is almost more famous for its ability to relieve the pains of arthritis etc. I think these two actions are very much related.
In bulk you can take it by the teaspoonful -- one heaping teaspoon is about 5 grams and I would encourage you to start small, but build up to about 20 grams per day.
With capsules, I recommend you start with a few, but do not hesitate to get up to 20 or more capsules per day. You can pull a capsule apart to put the contents into any beverage or to use in other ways.
