Dear Karl,
I thought you might be interested in some of my research and findings in reference to calcium.
One of the bits of misinformation that really bugs me is all the hype about calcium lately. Everybody seems to be jumping on the calcium bandwagon -Tums, orange juice, etc. What they keep forgetting to mention is that without magnesium, not only is the calcium not absorbed by your bones, but it can also cause kidney stones!
Kidney stones are caused by the formation of calcium oxalate crystals. It appears that if there is sufficient magnesium in your urine, it "competes" with the calcium's ability to combine with the oxalic acid. Magnesium oxalate doesn't form crystals, so your chances of developing kidney stones is greatly reduced.
I had kidney stones once in 1980. I was told to reduce my intake of calcium-containing foods, like milk and cheese, and to expect to be passing stones at least once a year, as this was what usually happens. Not being satisfied with this answer from my doctor, I went to the local college library and started researching kidney stones, which is where I obtained the above information.
I started including wheat germ and other foods rich in magnesium in my diet, reduced my intake of foods high in oxalic acid, and started drinking plenty of water. I haven't had a single reoccurrence since!
A woman I once worked with -- her husband -- has been following his doctors' orders for 10 years now, and still gets a kidney stone attack once a year on average! What really strikes me funny is that he was never advised to reduce his intake of foods high in oxalic acid, such as peanuts, spinach, etc.!
I hate to see what's going to happen to him from having almost no calcium in his diet for the last 10 years.
Dan
Dear Dan,
I asked you to consider adding references to your original message to me, and you have done that. I've checked those references and am pleased to endorse your findings and publish them here. This will also serve as the first time I have invited someone else to contribute to my 7,000 pages, and perhaps I'll now receive more of these originations from my viewers.
You have correctly pointed out that orange juice and Tums are terrible sources of calcium and that false advertising claims are creating disease from lack of proper calcium for the body. I sell what appears to be a very expensive form of calcium -- we call it Bone Dense Calcium. The formula includes magnesium and several other ingredients -- it is a lot less expensive than treating kidney stones or having osteoporosis!
