Ted C asks:
Question:
My wife isn't the only one in my family that has severe osteoporosis. I was shocked (about a year and a half ago) to learn that I suffer from the same problem. It is obvious that Osteoporosis can also occur in men. Now both of us take Fosamax every day and 1500 mg of calcium (+magnesium) daily. We eat a lot of fruits and vegetables (we're practically vegen) and both of us are slim or thin in stature.
(1) Are your comments on your website (betterbones.com) applicable to men as well?
(2) Is ipriflavone available as a supplement in health food stores? If not, where can it be obtained? (I assume you would recommend that we both should take it)
(3) Is Ostivone recommended?
(4) My doctors don't seem to know much about ipriflavone. How can I find a doctor that does?
Answer from Susan Brown, Ph.D:
(1) The information that we provide on Osteoporosis pertains to both men and women, with a few exceptions. One exception, of course, is that men need different sex hormone supplementation then do women, when such is required. A second thing to note is that certain medications have been tested mainly or only on women, thus we really don't know there complete effects on men. Ipriflavone is one of these substances that have been mainly tested on women.
(2) Ipriflavone is available in health food stores.
(3) Ostivone is my preferred source of ipriflavone. I would repeat however, that very little work has been done on ipriflavone use in men.
(4) You can certainly refer your doctor to our website for we have the most comprehensive, 3rd-party review of the ipriflavone data that is available.

Doelle from Central Falls, Rhode Island asks...
"My doctor says I have mild osteopenia. He suggested that I research it and look into the possibility of taking Evista, Fosamax, or Miacallin. Is it necessary to go on medication or can taking calcium be enough? Where can I get more information on osteopenia?"
Answer
Osteopenia is a word used to denote mild bone loss in opposition to osteoporosis which is excessive bone loss. For example, one is said to have osteoporosis if their bone mineral density is 2.5 or more standard deviations less that the bone mineral density of a standard reference of a young adult of the same sex. Osteopenia, on the other hand, is the term used when the bone density is anywhere from 1.0 standard deviation to 2.49 standard deviations below that of the standard reference young adult of the same sex. In the U.S. some 10 million people are reported to have osteoporosis and perhaps another 18 million osteopenia.
