I was delighted to correct a misunderstanding I had as I did the research connected with this article. I had believed that calcium carbonate, for instance, was absorbed INTO the blood stream as calcium carbonate. It turns out that I was wrong! IF calcium carbonate is going to be "absorbed" into the blood stream, it will only be because individual atoms of calcium (and separate carbon) are dissolved off of the lump of calcium carbonate, pass through the intestinal wall AS atoms of calcium and as atoms of carbon, etc., from there do there thing!
Many people write about this concept of "absorption" from the intestine into the blood stream without ever explaining it properly. I have finally discovered the technology on this.
On the inside of the intestine there are little "fingers" of tissue poking inwards. These have the fancy name of "villi." [Definition: Any minute projection arising from a mucous membrane.] You can think of these villi as like grass growing on the inside of the gut. As medium sized particle get pushed down the gut it will get caught in the villi and stick there a while. All the while the villi are carefully absorbing whatever they can from the surface of the particle. If the particle is large, it won’t get deep down near the roots of the villi and won’t stay stuck in the "grass" for long before it gets pushed along to the next clump, then the next, and finally into the toilet.
On the other hand, if the particle is very tiny, it gets lodged down deep between the roots of the villi and can stay there for a long time, being absorbed. Furthermore, it is ONLY the surface area of the particle which is being absorbed from. If you take one large round particle and break it into the SAME volume, but 100 much smaller particles, the size of each particle will be 1% in volume, but will be about 5% of the original in surface area! If the particle is broken down into 1,000,000 particles, same volume as original, the surface area will be enormous! It is the SURFACE AREA from which atoms are absorbed. Thus you can see why very small particles are so much more easily absorbed – they provide more surface area per unit of volume, AND they get stuck down near the roots of villi for longer time periods.
