Karl Loren Note:  I've been publishing stuff on web pages for many years.  Now, however, as I'm almost 72 years old, the 'ole body is starting to have things go wrong that I just never saw during those first 65 years!

So, it is interesting to me that my research and writing is, not unsurprisingly, shifted often into the direction of my personal interest.  Recently I took my temperature.  It was no big thing, just decided to check my temperature.

Well, the first few times I tried, it was just too hard to read the darn glass thermometer.  But, as close as I could get to reading it, it looked sub-normal. I rather rejected that.  Just didn't think that was likely.

Then, I got new batteries for my electrical, digital thermometer, and by golly the temperatures have been subnormal just about every time I check.  This morning, February 26, 2003, it was two full degrees below the normal 98.6 degrees.  (This line, added on March 4, 2003, takes note that my personal temperature has been subnormal every day, often two or three readings in a day, and sometimes as much as 4 degrees lower than 98.6.)

So, when I found these low temperature readings for myself, I naturally turned my knowledge of internet searching and found the article below. I then featured this page in my free electronic newsletter, the Wednesday Letter, published on February 26, 2003.

Since then I have done much more research, including this interesting study.

Researchers Emanuel Donchin and Noel Marshall, from the University of Chicago, found that slight low body temperature, just one or two degrees below normal, was enough to reduce certain brain responses in test subjects.5
Dr Stephen Langer,6 estimates that 40% of Americans have subnormal temperatures. He found that a mere one degree below the desired 98.6ºF is sufficient to produce a host of mental and physical symptoms such as headaches, depression, nervousness, etc.
Hospital blood tests for thyroid function are unreliable. Extreme cases might be picked up, but many people will have a sub-clinical thyroid system malfunction, which will be missed by these tests, as they gauge glandular function by measuring levels of thyroid hormones in the bloodstream. But the thyroid hormones have their action in the cells of the body at the nuclear membrane receptors, and there is no method of accurately measuring such intracellular activity.  (source)

Here is another study with similar data -- the main study is below, on this page.

In the process of respiration, waste products are exposed to the
action of the oxygen in the air and they are burned up very much
as if they were put into a stove thereby producing body heat.  In
the living, body heat, whether tangible or not, is continually
being generated through the chemical action of carbon and oxygen.

When the blood receives sufficient oxygen to unite with the carbon
in the proportion of two atoms of oxygen to one of carbon, carbon
dioxide or carbonic acid gas (CO2) is formed, and being in a
suitable state, is eliminated.  The process of oxidation is
complete.  The body temperature is maintained at normal (98.6 F);
the organs perform their functions properly, and the system is in
the condition to resist the toxic influences of microbes,
environment and mankind's excesses.  When, however, an
insufficient amount of oxygen is received by the blood carbon
monoxide (CO) is formed.  This is NOT readily eliminated and,
through its poisonous influences, trouble begins.  Carbon monoxide is a De-oxidizer.  It acts as an irritant to organs; the body temperature falls below normal and the system is incapable of resisting the toxic influences of the various bacteria,
environmental and industry-related toxins and DISEASE is the
result.  (Source)

Note the extremely early date, 1907, on this study -- showing that the problem was well known, but since no drug will help, the problem has not gotten much notice.

One of our best aids in making a diagnosis generally is the clinical thermometer, but the force of habit is responsible for many oversights in its use. As a rule, when we unsheathe our thermometers for clinical observations, we anticipate fever and feel contented when the register fails to poke its nose above the spear that stands for normal. So strong is this habit and so fully are we imbued with the idea of fever that we have fallen into the custom of calling the clinical thermometer "a fever thermometer." It is a most common occurrence to hear a physician ask for "a fever thermometer" or speak of the clinical thermometer as a fever thermometer.  (source)

After this page was published, then revised, and during this time, I got many messages showing interest.  Rather than add to this page I've decided to start a new page and outline that page in light of all the new data I've been looking at.  I encourage you to go to this page for the most recent of my findings.

I've already published a few pages about the remedy the article suggests -- an "ozone machine" and I expect to buy one one of these days soon.  I'll put my experiences up here then, too.

The one claim I found very interesting, below, is that virtually every case of subnormal body temperature responds to ozone therapy with a rise in temperature up to normal.

So, I'll surely be reporting on that.

So, as I continue to move into these "old age" years, you'll see more and more articles oriented toward whatever happens to ME!

Enjoy!

Oxidation   Dr. William Turska, 1951

Health is dependent almost entirely upon a pure, healthy blood and general humoral circulation. Every organ, nerve, tissue and cell depends on vital blood and humoral fluid for nourishment and elimination of wastes.

When these vital fluids are impaired, the system begins a general degeneration and alteration from the norm. The object of respiration is to bring atmospheric oxygen in close relationship with the hemoglobin of the blood and permit the interchange of oxygen with carbon dioxide, thus eliminating this end product of oxidation along with other products in minute quantities.

In the process of respiration, waste products are exposed to the action of oxygen and they are combusted, producing body heat. In the living organism, heat is continually being generated through the chemical action of oxygen upon carbon.

When the blood receives sufficient oxygen to unite with the carbon, carbon dioxide is formed, which is in a suitable state to be eliminated. The process of oxidation is complete, the body temperature is maintained at normal, the organs perform their functions properly and the system is in a condition to resist the influence of microbes.

When, however, an insufficient amount of oxygen is received by the blood, carbon is incompletely burned, and carbon monoxide is produced. Through its poisonous influence, the system becomes debilitated, or 'run down.'

Carbon Monoxide

Carbon monoxide is an irritant to the nervous system, it attaches to the hemoglobin in red blood cells, and it interferes with organ functions.

The body temperature is reduced below normal which renders the system incapable of resisting the influence of various bacteria, viruses and yeast. Disease is the result.

Subnormal temperatures indicate under-oxidation, or hypoxia.

The under oxidized person will present a host of symptoms: headache, backache, insomnia, vertigo, constipation, asthenia, anemia, and non-specific gastro-intestinal upsets.

Under-oxidation renders the system susceptible to a multiplicity of disorders, which will worsen and become chronic over time.

Ozone

Scientists long ago recognized the great oxidizing and antiseptic properties of ozone, but owing to its irritating effects and toxic properties when used in raw form, it was abandoned from the therapeutic calendar except in a few instances.

[Karl Note:  Click here for studies on toxicity of ozone.  My opinion is that these studies do not show ozone to be very toxic, but mildly so. The test procedures were extreme.

Click here for studies showing the beneficial effects of ozone treatments.]

The therapeutic abilities of ozone were in evidence, but the manner of application would not allow reliable results. With modern equipment and protocols, ozone is now able to be used to great therapeutic effect. It has been found that ozone potentiates hormones, botanicals, vitamins and many drugs by an amount ranging from 10 - 100%. In addition, it has been demonstrated that ozone treatment of milk completely eliminates any harmful bacteria without having to resort to pasteurization, which destroys beneficial enzymes.

Like oxygen, ozone is a healthful gas. It has, however, much greater oxidizing, antiseptic and germicidal power and for this reason is being used with great success for the relief of various diseases.

Recently, the FDA and EPA have been telling the public that ozone is poisonous, and detrimental to the body. This is not so! For years physicians around the world have used ozone for bringing palliative and curative results to many, many individuals.

Ozone is one of the most energetic and useful agents known to science. Its therapeutic action is due to oxygenation of the blood by the loose molecule (free radical) of oxygen in the O3 compound. It is carried to the various organs and tissues of the body and absorbed, thus oxidizing the waste products, and facilitating their elimination. In other words, ozone increases the metabolism without the expenditure of vital energy and special stress should be laid on the fact that ozone is a NATURAL remedy.

In the process of respiration waste products are exposed to the action of the oxygen of the air, and they are burned up very much as if they were put into a stove, thereby producing body heat. In the living body, heat, whether tangible or not, is continually being generated through the chemical action of carbon and oxygen.

When the blood receives sufficient oxygen to unite with the carbon, carbon dioxide (CO2) is formed, which is in a suitable state to be eliminated. The process of oxidation
is complete, the body temperature maintained at normal (98.6 oF), the organs perform their functions properly and the system is in a condition to resist the toxic influences of microbes, environment and mankind's excesses.

When, however, an insufficient amount of oxygen is received by the blood, carbon monoxide (CO) is formed, which is NOT readily eliminated, and through its poisonous influences, trouble begins. Carbon monoxide is a DE-oxidizer. It acts as an irritant to the organs, the body temperature is reduced below normal and the system is rendered incapable of resisting the toxic influences of various bacteria, viruses and environmental toxins, and disease is the result. So prevalent is subnormal temperature among people who are called 'run down.' that nine out of ten of them will show a subnormal temperature by actual thermometer test.

There have been several reasons given for subnormal temperatures in recent years: they range from 'thyroid insufficiency' to 'hypothalamus disorders.' These explanations are correct, but only to a degree. The CAUSE of the problem is low and inadequate oxidation. Therefore the thyroid, hypothalamus, or endocrine organs (given as the cause) are hindered in their normal metabolic function and the sub-normal temperature is the result. The correct way to counteract this situation is to give a substance that will restore the oxidative process.

The clinical thermometer is the best means of determining the existence of under oxidation and should be used routinely. The temperature of one who is under oxidized will be found to run from a fraction to several degrees below normal.

The under oxidized and subnormal temperature person will present one of more of the following symptoms: headache, dizziness, insomnia, constipation, faint-feeling, loss of appetite, palpitation of the heart, liver and kidney problems, menstrual problems, cold hands and feet, anemia, gastrointestinal problems, chlorosis, etc., all of which are due to an impoverished blood supply.

The symptoms or conditions that rise from a subnormal temperature are not necessarily in proportion to the degree of subnormal temperature. A person showing a fractional part of one degree of subnormal temperature may present as severe problems or conditions of disease as one who is several degrees below normal.

A sufficiency of oxygen for the blood means better blood, better circulation, better assimilation, better equilibrium of body temperature, better vasomotor activity, better digestion, better elimination of waste products, less chance of autointoxication or toxemia, and less chance of infection and disease.

After careful analytical investigation of disease, it has been demonstrated:

1. That one of the most common important conditions that the person is called upon to correct is weakness produced by an impoverished or diminished blood supply.

2. That under-oxidation produces bad health primarily because of an insufficient supply of oxygen that makes certain the formation of carbon monoxide, which is at once a de-oxidizer, a hemoglobin destroyer and an irritant poison devitalizing the blood and paving the way for a multiplicity of acute troubles, many of which run into chronicity.

It has been suggested that a subnormal temperature may be a normal condition with some people. This deduction can be disproved by placing anyone with a subnormal temperature under active influence of ozone and the temperature can be made to rise back to normal.

Almost all forms of nervous, functional, respiratory and blood disorders can be successfully corrected by oxidation restoration. The effects are perfectly natural, the nerves being left calm and toned with a feeling of buoyancy and exhilaration. It stimulates the vasomotor system through the nerve centers, which fact is clearly shown in the increased redness of the skin, a feeling of warmth in the whole body, and waste products being more freely eliminated.

The ozone treatment show that poor oxidation is the cause of many disorders, by reason of the fact that when the temperature is brought up to normal, the problems disappear.

The Importance of Oxygen - Dr. Robert E. Willner MD PhD.

Virtually every patient's room in a modern hospital is equipped for the administration of oxygen. Every emergency room is required by law to have the same equipment. Deep breathing exercises are prescribed for patients with lung problems and for persons recovering from surgery. The narrow applications of these techniques is very unfortunate. They should be routine for every person. The average person takes their respiration for granted. There are large Eastern religions who incorporate consciousness of breathing as an important teaching in their religious instruction. Indians refer to 'prana" as a wonderful substance that God has provided for a healthy life. It seems certain that prana is ozone.

Deep breathing exercises carry greater importance today than ever before, because of the lowered amount of oxygen in the air in our cities. The effect of gradual oxygen deprivation on metabolism is devastating and leads to a greater production, and an inadequate processing, of the toxic wastes that our bodies produce daily. One of the consequences of a lowered oxygen supply is the elevation of uric acid in the body. This causes a wide variety of metabolic problems.

The most common disease associated with a uric acid disorder is gout and it is primarily due to an inability to fully process meat protein. However, almost every system of the body is detrimentally affected. The formation of kidney stones and gall bladder stones, the blocking of circulation, and the destruction of joints by the formation of crystalline deposits are just a few fo the serious problems that arise.

There are hundreds of known biochemical reactions in the body the utilize oxygen. Acute deprivation of oxygen (hypoxia) leads to a rapid death; we are simply getting there more slowly. The impairment of oxidative processes is directly related to the development and progress of cancer.

The use of ozone in the treatment of cancer addresses the problem of cellular hypoxia, or oxygen starvation, and has wide systemic effects. The efficacy of this treatment has been proven over the last fifty years in Germany.

In order to appreciate ozone one must first understand fully the critical role oxygen plays in human life. Oxygen is by far the most important necessity of human life. It performs hundreds of tasks in the body, but the two most important are energy production and detoxification.

The production of energy in the body is accomplished by the combination of glucose with oxygen, producing ATP. The body makes an amount of ATP equivalent to your body weight every 24 hours. If you make 10% less ATP than normal, you will feel tired and sluggish. If ATP production falls too far, you will deteriorate rapidly, and die. Energy is life and the production of energy in the body depends upon oxygen.

The second important function of oxygen is to combine with metabolic waste products to allow their elimination from the body. This process is called the oxidation reduction cycle. When insufficient oxygen is available, the detoxification process slows down, wastes pile up, circulation becomes sluggish, oxygen is prevented from reaching the cells and disease results. Thus, we can see that oxygen is essential to these two vital phases of life.

Since oxygen is the most critical requirement for life, the ingestion of substances the increase the level of oxygen in the body are the most beneficial to optimum health. The best sources of oxygen are ozone, hydrogen peroxide and magnesium peroxide.

Another take:

Under oxygenation is one of the main underlying causes of poor health. Oxygen/Ozone therapy seeks to redress this imbalance. Oxygen starvation is caused by poor breathing, de-oxygenated and refined foods, smoking, lack of exercise, environmental pollution and carbon monoxide poisoning (especially for those living in cities i.e. most of us) and the natural reduction in ambient oxygen that has been taking place since the Cretaceous era as confirmed by Science News November 7th 1987. Other treatments both conventional and alternative do work - as long as the blood stream is properly oxygenated.

We believe lack of sufficient cellular oxygen is a major cause of poor health i.e. low immunity, constant tiredness, regular colds and flu's, low vitality and M.E. These problems all respond well to oxygen/ozone therapy. People with asthma and bronchitis also respond particularly well, though ozone is never actually inhaled it is applied by various methods which bypass the lungs. Headache and migraine sufferers also report benefits (are these conditions caused by lack of oxygen to the brain?) What we do know is that when the body is flooded with an activated form of oxygen, namely ozone, people consistently report that their health dramatically improves.

THYROID
by Raymond Peat, PhD

Chapter 11, from FROM PMS to MENOPAUSE: Female Hormones in Context

This book, and all of Dr. Peat’s books can be purchased by writing to: Raymond Peat, PhD, PO Box 5764, Eugene, OR 97405 USA

Measuring the amount of thyroid in the blood isn’t a good way to evaluate adequacy of thyroid function, since the response of tissues to the hormone can be suppressed (for example, by unsaturated fats).

In the 1930’s accurate diagnosis was made by evaluating a variety of indications, including basal oxygen consumption, serum cholesterol level, pulse rate, temperature, carotenemia, bowel function, and quality of hair and skin. A good estimate can be made using only the temperature and pulse rate. (Pulse rate should be thought of as an indicator of the rate of blood circulation, meaning that the strength of the pulse should increase with the rate; a rapid but weak, shock-like pulse gives useful information, but has a different meaning.)

Oral or armpit temperature, in the morning before getting out of bed, should be around 98 degrees F, and it should rise to 98.6 degrees by mid-morning. This is not valid if you sleep under an electric blanket, or if the weather is hot and humid. A person who is hypothyroid produces heat at a low rate, but doesn’t lose it at the normal rate, since there is less sweating, and the skin is relatively cool. Many hypothyroid people compensate with high adrenalin production (sometimes 40 times higher than normal), and this tends to keep the skin cool, especially on the hands, feet, and nose. The high adrenalin is the consequence of low blood glucose, so a feeding of carbohydrate, such as a loss of orange juice, will sometimes lower the pulse rate momentarily.

Since thyroid is in essential for producing progesterone, and progesterone is “thermogenic” in the sense of setting the temperature control system higher, the body sometimes maintains a subnormal temperature even in warm weather. Healthy populations have an average resting pulse rate of about 85 per minute. Especially in hot weather it is useful to consider both temperature and pulse rate.

The Achilles tendon reflex is another quick way to estimate thyroid function. This reflex is used because of the insignificant weight of the toes in relation to contraction of the gastrocnemius muscle. The T (repolarization) wave on the electrocardiogram is a similar indicator of the rate of energy production. Thumping the Achilles tendon causes the muscle to contract (unless it is already in a semi-contracted state, which isn’t uncommon). The contraction consumes energy, and the muscle can’t relax until enough energy has been produced to restore the threshold and the readiness for a new contraction. (Creatinine levels are a vague indicator of the activity of this system, and are often a little low in hypothyroidism.)

If energy production is efficient, relaxation is faster than the passive return motion of the foot, so the foot swings freely back to its original position, and over-shoots slightly, causing a slight swinging action. In hypo- thyroidism, the foot returns as if controlled by a pneumatic door–closer, and settles slowly and precisely into its relaxed position, sometimes with a hesitating, intermittent motion. This slow replenishment of energy, and slow relaxation, can cause muscles to cramp easily. The aching leg muscles of children at the end of an active day are often a sign of hypothyroidism, and sometimes the gastrocnemius muscle become very swollen and hypertrophied in hypothyroid children. The same process, of slow energy regeneration, can cause rhythm disturbance in the heart, and often causes insomnia and restless sleep.

The thyroid gland secretes about 3 parts of thyroxin to one part of triiodothyronine, and this allows the liver to regulate thyroid function, by converting more of the T4 to the active T3 when there is an abundance of energy. Glucose is essential for the conversion, so during fasting there is a sharp decrease in metabolic rate, and in experiments, 200 or 300 calories of carbohydrates can added to the diet without causing fat storage.

When the liver is the main cause of hypothyroidism, your temperature (and especially the temperature of your nose, hands and feet) will fall when you are hungry, and will rise when you eat carbohydrates. If a hypothyroid person has a very slow pulse, and feels lethargic, it seems that there is little adrenalin; in this case, a feeding of carbohydrate is likely to increase both the pulse rate and the temperature, as the liver is permitted to form the active T3 hormone.

Women often have above-average thyroxin with symptoms of hypothyroidism. This is apparently because it isn’t being converted to the active form (T3). Before using a Cytomel (T3) supplement, it might be possible to solve the problem with diet alone. A piece of fruit or a glass of juice or milk between meals, and adequate animal protein (or potato protein) in the diet is sometimes enough to allow the liver to produce the hormone. If Cytomel is used, it is efficient to approximate the physiological rate T3 formation, by nibbling one (10 or 15 mcg.) tablet during the day. When a large amount is taken at one time, the liver is likely to convert much of it to the inactive reverse-T3 form, in a normal defense response.

Women normally have less active livers than men do. Estrogen can have a directly toxic effect on the liver, but the normal reason for the difference is probably that temperature and thyroid function strongly influence the liver, and are generally lower in women than in men. Estrogen inhibits the secretion of hormone by the thyroid gland itself, probably by inhibiting the proteolytic enzyme which dissolves the colloid. Progesterone has the opposite effect, promoting the release of the hormones from the gland. At puberty, in pregnancy, and at menopause, the thyroid gland often enlarges, probably as a result of estrogen dominance.

Thyroid function stimulates the liver to inactivate estrogen for secretion, so estrogen dominance can create a vicious circle, in which excess estrogen (or deficient progesterone) blocks thyroid secretion, causing the liver to allow estrogen to accumulate to even higher levels. Progesterone (even one dose, in some cases) can break the cycle. However, if the gland is very big, the person can experience a few months of hyperthyroidism, as the gland returns to normal. It is better to allow the enlarged gland to shrink more slowly by using a thyroid supplement. If an enlarged gland does begin to secrete too much thyroid hormone, it can be controlled with tablets of propylthiouracil, or even with raw cabbage or cabbage juice, and cysteine-rich meats, including liver.

Besides fasting, or chronic protein deficiency, the common causes of hypothyroidism are excessive stress or “aerobic” (i.e., anaerobic) exercise, and diets containing beans, lentils, nuts, unsaturated fats (including carotene), and undercooked broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, or mustard greens. Many health conscious people become hypothyroid with a synergistic program of undercooked vegetables, legumes instead of animal protein, oils instead of butter, carotene instead of vitamin A, and breathless exercise instead of a stimulating life.

A good diet, plus a supplement of either thyroid or progesterone, can often break the cycle of hormonal imbalance.

If a person has at least a normal level of cholesterol, it is very likely that a progesterone deficiency can be corrected by normalizing the thyroid function, since thyroid, vitamin A, and cholesterol are the main factors in the synthesis of progesterone. If the problem is that the ratio of estrogen to progesterone is too high, though progesterone might itself be at a reasonable level, thyroid becomes crucial, to bring the estrogen level down to normal. In hypothyroidism there is a tendency to develop cystic ovaries, and low thyroid function normally leads to estrogen dominance, even if the ovaries seem normal.

Thwarting Low Thyroid
By Anthony Almada, M.S.

The annals of Ayurvedic medicine have given us ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), also known as Indian ginseng. While numerous studies have explored this herb's ability to improve stress tolerance, enhance immune modulation and possibly even benefit inflammatory diseases such as arthritis, recent research has examined its effect on those suffering from low thyroid hormone levels. This condition, called hypothyroidism, is often marked by cold hands and feet, poor tolerance to cold, sluggish bowel function and even subnormal body temperature.

One animal study with male mice showed orally delivered extracts of ashwagandha to increase both thyroxine, the more abundant thyroid hormone (and a widely used prescription drug), and T3, its more potent counterpart; a similar study in female mice showed an increase in thyroxine only. This is especially relevant news, since very few natural products have been shown to increase thyroid hormones in the blood.

While these studies suggest those with low to normal thyroid hormone concentrations may benefit from ashwagandha supplementation, validation in clinical human studies is needed. Although such studies are lacking, the long history of ashwagandha's traditional use in Ayurvedic medicine as an adaptogen and tonic strongly supports its safety.
