This is the PERSONAL story about and by Karl Loren, written on March 2, 2003, and published as The Wednesday Letter of March 5, 2003.
Just a few weeks ago from this writing, on March 2, 2003, Jean Ross, my wife, had the occasion to take her temperature. The first couple of readings seemed to be subnormal. That surprised me so I immediately did some research on subnormal body temperature.
I found an amazing article that explained what subnormal body temperature means. That is published HERE.
As I read this I couldn't help but relate the material to "sleep apnea" which I am also researching on a personal basis. Practically no one connects these two situations, but I think there may be a connection. HERE is my information about sleep apnea. HERE are several scientific studies about sleep apnea -- I was looking for some reference to subnormal body temperature, but didn't find any.
I then found that the solution for subnormal body temperature is simple, even if it had not been known to me, and has not been known to anyone I inquired from. The problem of subnormal body temperature is inadequate oxygen in the blood, and the solution is to breathe some "ozone" which is a "rich" form of oxygen. Here was my first research on ozone machines. Then I found a different type of machine that claimed to make something "better than" ozone, HERE.
I saw that there were some who said that ozone could be dangerous, so I looked up the study that summarized that issue. HERE.
Groups of five male and five female F344/N rats were exposed to 0, 0.5, or 1.0 ppm ozone by inhalation 6 hours per day, 5 days per week, for a total of 20 days. (Source)
The machine I finally purchased can be set to produce up to 360 milligrams per hour of ozone.
Despite the initial comment that ozone was dangerous, particularly in these quantities being tested, the results did not show any death nor any cancer in any of the studies. Apparently as long as there is not a "strong" ozone smell, the amount of ozone is very safely low.
Then, I looked for studies that showed the great beneficial effects of breathing in ozone. Here.
On the contrary, I found many studies showing good results.
The O2-O3 therapy caused a significant increase of erythrocyte filterability and a significant decrease of blood viscosity. (source)
Then, I decided to look into the purchase of an ozone machine. My first find on this search was for a "professional" type that was rather expensive.
I then wondered if some of the popularly advertised "air filters" were also ozone generators, and start down the path of the most well-known air filter. This is undoubtedly the multi-level-marketing company, formerly known as "Alpine." I found that Alpine had some problems with the FCC, HERE, and decided to "sell off" its marketing to a new company, EcoQuest. I started gathering information about the EcoQuest machines.
WASHINGTON, April 18, 2000 -- The Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice have filed a motion in Federal Court to hold Alpine Industries, its officers and a related company, EcoQuest International in civil contempt of a Court order issued in January 2000. (source)
Along the same time I discovered that a close personal friend had recently wanted to get an "air filter" for her own home use, and had signed up to be a distributor in the MLM for EcoQuest.
(Incidentally, that is very often the motivation for people who join MLMs -- to get some of the company product at wholesale. Like almost all others in her situation, she offered to get me one of these machines at HER COST. I've written many scathing reports on MLM companies, including THIS, THIS, THIS and THIS. However, my early impressions of Alpine were generally good, not critical. I did not view the FCC action, above, as sufficient to eliminate them from consideration.
I might have purchased at wholesale through my friend, but along the way of my looking I went to eBay. That is an amazing service if you are not familiar with it.
I found, quickly, that one of the very machines which I had
decided on was being auctioned off. The "retail price" for this machine,
the
Alpine / Ecoquest XL-15 Air Purifier
from EcoQuest, is $669. I know that very few people pay that price, but even
so, the wholesale price (to my distributor friend) was about $475. Here on eBay I found a new one of these machines being auctioned with a bid price of
$200.
I decided to pursue the eBay model -- it seemed rationale to save $200 if I could, and my friend had told me that she didn't expect to become an active distributor for EcoQuest.
I then read with more care and found that the eBay model was
"NEW" but -- it had been used as a demo model, only, was guaranteed as good as
new, but did not have the original box it came in. That sounded OK to me,
so I started bidding. This machine was used once as a demo model. Comes with all the original
equipment, ie. Ozone plate, Filter & Fuse. Not in original box due to minor
water damage on box only. The machine is in perfect condition and ready for
years of use. The buyer will pay a fixed shipping cost of
ONLY $15.00 (source)
The current bid was $200, so I bid $210. The bidding went on, with some other guy raising the bid, until I finally bid $297, and the other bidder did not go higher. So, on Saturday, March 2, 2003, I learned that I was the successful bidder. My machine will be shipped to me by UPS and arrive in about a week or so.
So, this same page will contain the results of my first usages of this device.
After doing all this I then talked to another very good friend. She had recently bought an "air filter" but she bought the one that is currently being highly promoted in TV adds -- the "SharperImage" machine at about $350. This one emphasizes that it has no fan to be noisy, and no filter to change and replace.
My machine has a fan, and probably has a filter -- I'll find about about the filter.
I do not plan to sell any machine like this -- so my opinion on what I have bought will be an unbiased one.
