Difference Between CALCIUM EDTA and MAGNESIUM EDTA

A false claim by one John Morgenthaler has confused both doctors and consumers alike. He has falsely claimed that "magnesium EDTA" is toxic and has never been used for chelation purposes. He is exactly wrong. His wrongness is probably explained by the fact that he advocates the use of mind-altering drugs. I, Karl Loren, have studied the use of such drugs so thoroughly that I know what harm they cause and refuse to sell any of my products to any person taking any of the usual psychiatric drugs, such as Prozac. Mr. Morgenthaler's material is quoted below for the purpose of making these critical remarks about his material. It is in the public interest to expose lies such as these. This claim of Mr. Morgenthaler's false information was made some years ago and is repeated and re-confirmed this 17th day of October 2004.

He has threatened me with legal action HERE, with his letter of October 13, 2004.

That threat was followed up with a further legal threat which I responded to HERE.

John Morgenthaler is an integral part of a web that promotes chemicals to enhance the mind -- a concept that denies any spiritual reality. Such people are chemical doctors, and are fully explained in THIS ARTICLE about Dr. Wundt. A less pleasant phrase for what he advocates is "mind altering drugs." LSD was a favorite for such people before it became illegal, and its dangers were better known.

Morgenthaler and his crew sell a simple oral chelation formula that is OK, but not complete, and when you compare it with my own simple formula, costs more.

EDTA was originally NOT one of the ingredients in my oral chelation formula. After being encouraged by Dr. Garry F. Gordon, and considerable study, I have added EDTA to my chelation formula. There is an interview with Dr. Gordon on this page, here.

First, I, Karl Loren, have dozens of pages about EDTA used in my oral chelation formula.

EDTA is a molecule that can have many forms, any of many other elements attached to it. This is true because it is the nature of this molecule, EDTA, to "attract" other elements. If you have a shower in your home, and the shower walls are getting the white deposit from the calcium in your water, you would use EDTA, as in one of the commercial "shower cleaning products" pictured to the right. This is basically EDTA WITHOUT added calcium. As this is sprayed on the walls of the shower it "binds" with the calcium on the walls and helps remove the calcium. That is, the attraction between the EDTA and the calcium is stronger than the attraction between the calcium and the wall. The "left over" EDTA from this cleaning process could be called "Calcium EDTA" because the mixture now has calcium bound to the EDTA. If you wanted a shower cleaner, you would certainly NOT start with "Calcium EDTA" since it would be bound, already, to Calcium, and would not pick up any more.

If, on the other hand, you wanted to prevent rust on machinery, you can add plain EDTA to the lubricant. The EDTA will attract any iron that happens to be found, bind to the iron, and prevent the iron from then combining with oxygen and creating "rust." So, EDTA is well recognized, first, as a binding agent, and second as a binding agent that has many special purposes. Since the binding action of EDTA is "sequential" it will bind with iron more easily (and more strongly) than it binds with calcium. Thus, if you use "Calcium EDTA" to clean a shower wall, it will not work since it won't "unbind" from the calcium to pick up more calcium.

But, in theory anyway, if you use Calcium EDTA to prevent rust, it would left go of the calcium in order to bind with iron, thus preventing rust.

EDTA is often used in fertilizers with EITHER magnesium or calcium (or other metals) mixed with the other elements in the fertilizer. This usage of EDTA allows the Calcium or the Magnesium to be "released" when the EDTA bumps into other (heavier) minerals in the soil. In other cases, for instance "Iron-EDTA," the EDTA prevents the iron from becoming unavailable as a nutrient for plants.

EDTA binds to magnesium also, but even more weakly than to calcium, or anything, for that matter.

The numbers next to each element (such as "2+" indicate that this is a "charged atom" or a form of that element where some electrons are missing from the normal atom. Thus, EDTA not only has a sequential nature, but only attracts elements that are "charged."

In general the above sequential list can be understood to mean that EDTA will be attracted first to magnesium, and when it bumps into calcium, it lets go of the magnesium and binds to the calcium. If it is bound to calcium, and bumps into magnesium, it will NOT bind to the magnesium. In the human body this sequence continues as long as the EDTA is in the body -- about one hour if taken orally before that part which is absorbed into the body is eliminated. That part which stays in the stomach and intestine will remain "active" in moving up the list to heavier metals as long as it remains in the stomach or intestine -- often 24 hours. So, EDTA is actually a more efficient chelator when taken orally than when taken intravenously -- and even attracts heavy metals from the body, through the intestinal wall, into the EDTA located in the intestine. This is a remarkable molecule.

In the early years the blockage in the arteries was considered to be calcium mixed with cholesterol. Even I believed that some 20 years ago when I created the first Vibrant Life oral chelation product.

We now know that the "blockage" is NOT where these doctors thought it was. Since they thought that the calcium blockage was a "coating" on the inner lining of the arteries (not true), and they KNEW that EDTA improved blood circulation, they wrongly figured that "magnesium EDTA" would be the right item to use to remove calcium.

For this reason "magnesium EDTA" was widely used for intravenous chelation therapy. The doctors wrongly thought that magnesium EDTA would go into the body, that the EDTA would let go of the magnesium and bind to the calcium, remove it, and thus remove blockage and improve blood flow.

In fact, the higher levels of elements on the list above indicate that EDTA would "let go" of any calcium if it happens to bump into iron, or lead, or any of the many other elements above calcium on this list.

Dr. Cranton was probably the first famous IV doctor to acknowledge that it was the heavy elements, such as lead, that caused free radicals, and thus caused heart disease, and that EDTA would be far more attracted to lead and the other heavy metals, rather than the lower items such as calcium or magnesium.

It has only been with the advent of Karl Loren's writings that the whole mechanism is now explained -- that the blockage of the arteries is NOT a coating of calcium on the inner lining of the arteries, but that this blockage is excess calcium INSIDE the cells of the arteries. This is fully explained here.

The series of three images to the right is the full presentation of the terrible lies that have been told, for decades, about heart disease. As long as doctors continue to believe that this blockage is a coating, or "build-up" on the inner lining, as portrayed here, we will continue to have millions of people die unnecessarily of heart disease, and buy billions of dollars worth of worthless Lipitor and other drugs.

One of the common problems with intravenous chelation therapy has been that when the needle is inserted into a vein it was not unusual for there to be a "burning sensation." After some time it was discovered that this was an irritation of the magnesium in the EDTA with the body. The solution was simple -- switch to calcium EDTA.

IV Doctors were, at first, very reluctant to do this because they still believed that they wanted to remove the calcium blockage from the arteries and that if they used calcium EDTA they would not accomplish this. Many IV doctors now use calcium EDTA but could not begin to explain how EDTA, already bound to calcium, would remove calcium from the arteries. Dr. Cranton, of course knows all about this. Even though he is very famous among IV doctors, they still don't learn -- they are stuck in the old lies.

I was one of the first to develop an oral chelation formula, but when I did this I had swallowed the false data put out by Dr. Cranton that "oral EDTA" was worthless. It was Dr. Garry F. Gordon who convinced me that I should add EDTA to my oral chelation formula. He is far advanced in understanding the nature of EDTA compared to almost all other IV doctors, and he knew that Calcium EDTA was better than Magnesium EDTA for IV chelation. The Calcium form did not cause the burning, and he knew (even if it took him some years) that the EDTA was NOT binding to calcium, but mostly lead.

So, when he switched from being one of the largest IV chelation clinics in the world to developing his own oral chelation formula, he had already been using the Calcium EDTA form in his IV practice, and it was logical to continue using Calcium EDTA in his oral chelation formula.

In truth, it would make no difference. You could add Magnesium EDTA or Calcium EDTA to an oral chelation formula -- because in either case the EDTA will "let go" of the mineral in order to grab a heavier one.

Furthermore, many formulas (including Vibrant Life) include extra magnesium and extra calcium, so that even plain EDTA (not "Calcium EDTA) could be added to the formula and as soon as it was in any liquid form that EDTA would immediately start binding. If there were no heavy metal available, immediately, it could, indeed, bind to either the calcium or the magnesium that had been part of the formula. But, it takes only a few minutes for the EDTA to bump into lead or some other heavy metal.

In addition to publishing false information about EDTA, Morgenthaler also sells a simple form of oral chelation product, called "CardioClear."

Life Glow Basic has 360 capsules per bottle, at $120, and each capsule provides 400 mg of EDTA and 100 mg of N Acetyl Cysteine. Thus, the CardioClear has only one third the number of capsules, and each capsule has about one half as much chelating material (for heart disease) as Life Glow Basic. If you wanted a very simpl oral chelation formula for heart health, then Life Glow Basic would be less costly and provides NAC which is not included in CardioClear.

While I sell and recommend Life Glow Basic, the more usual approach is to take a formula like Life Glow Plus that has 51 ingredients, in very high potency, for complete vitamin coverage.

The malic acid is useful in chelating aluminum, and has other useful functions. It is not much of a factor in preventing or reversing heart disease, however.

Below WAS is the beginning of the text which Mr. Morgenthaler has demanded, and my web server, Verio, has caved into the threat, and so has been officially removed because the server, Verio, threatens to enforce a penalty (to suspend all my 100,000 web pages immediately, without any trial or evidentiary hearing of any sort. This is clearly unconstitutional and I now include Verio as a large part of the problem in addition to Mr. Morgenthaler. Magnesium EDTA?

[Karl Note: There was, originally, a false claim in the original material by Mr. Morgenthaler. CLICK HERE to read a section from Dr. Gordon's own web page about "magnesium EDTA" described there as the standard form of EDTA used in the United States for many years. the primary reason why IV doctors have switched to Calcium EDTA relates to a "burning of the veins" when the magnesium form is used, and this is NOT a factor in oral chelation. This quote does appear on Morgenthaler's web site but NOT on Dr. Garry F. Gordon's web sites! No other person besides Morgenthaler is making this false claim -- yet. But, it is not unusual for such false claims to start spreading.

[Karl Loren: Clearly John Morgenthaler is out of his league here. The truth is that neither IV chelation nor oral chelation remove plaque or calcium or "calcified deposits" -- that is well proven here. Many ignorant writers have carried over the foolish errors of the past when IV doctors would describe their process as a "rooter rooter" of the arteries, during which the EDTA would chip away at the calcium that was clogging the arteries. This is simply a false picture of chelation. What Morgenthaler doesn't seem to know, and certainly Dr. Gordon does know, is that EDTA is used to remove HEAVY METALS from the body -- not calcium. For one thing it is combined with calcium, or with magnesium, so that it WILL NOT remove those minerals from the body -- but there is much more to it than that.

EDTA removes metals in a sequence, going after heavy metals first, and only after it finds no heavy metals might it bind to calcium or magnesium. The removal of body forms of calcium or magnesium is, first of all, very, very unlikely, and second, would be entirely prevented by combining either calcium or magnesium WITH the EDTA so that it could not take any OTHER sources of those minerals away.

The sequential and preferential nature of EDTA removal is not much understood. I publicize this, of course, but so does Dr. Elmer Cranton, HERE.

Morgenthaler is just wrong, and his chemical dependence on mind altering drugs is showing!]
